The Ebro Delta (2 minutes from Sant Carles)

From the air the Delta resembles a large barbed arrowhead jutting into the Mediterranean. Quite unlike the surrounding area, it is flat, swampy and at times seems to command its own weather conditions. Through the heart of this vast area runs the life-giving Ebro River. Early morning visitors often witness the sun rising from the ethereal greyness and shooting red arrows of light racing across the Delta's patchwork system of flooded rice fields, transforming the landscape into golden waterscape. On other days the land and sea would appear to unite and then blend, becoming an impressionist painting. It is an area whose appearance and mood reflect the changing of the seasons quite unlike the rest of the surrounding countryside.
